Strike rate

The share of a tipster's settled picks that won, ignoring the price they were taken at.

Measured — Strike rate
25th pct
47.6%
Median
55.0%
75th pct
62.1%

Across 311 tracked tipsters in the current release. The middle half of the distribution lies between the two outer figures; half of everything measured sits above the median and half below.

Strike rate is wins divided by wins plus losses. Voids are excluded because no stake was at risk, so a void is not a miss.

It is the most quoted number in tipping and the least informative on its own. A tipster picking short-priced favourites can win 70% of the time and lose money; one picking outsiders can win 25% and be highly profitable. Strike rate only becomes meaningful once you also know the odds those picks were taken at — which is why every record on this site reports it next to a yield rather than alone.

Sample size matters more here than anywhere else. Over 30 picks, a coin-flip tipster will beat 60% about one time in twenty by chance alone.

Every figure above is computed from the same corpus as the free-tips study, using the collection and settlement steps set out in the methodology. The individual records behind it are at tipster records.
